The strategy of Great Lakes European Shipping was to utilize smaller and less expensive vessels, thus being able to provide "regular service" at competitive rates.
Acquisition of the MV Holmsund was consistent with this strategy. The MV Menominee is a 503 foot vessel which was designed specifically for the transport of forest products.
The ship, one of three identical vessels, was constructed in 1967 in the Lindholmen Yard, Gothenburg, Sweden and is of the "highest ice class" and operated primarily in the Baltic, exclusively transporting forest products.
The success of the MV Menominee in providing "regular service" between Menominee and Europe in 1997, led to the creation of Great Lakes European Shipping and the purchase of a sister ship, the M/V Marinette, ex Tunadal.
